The arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the royal circuit made the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge look less exciting by comparison, a royal expert has claimed.

Speaking to Vanity Fair magazine, Anna Pasternak, author of The Real Wallis Simpson: A New History of the American Divorcee Who Became the Duchess of Windsor, alleged that tensions between the two households arose due to the ways in which they were perceived by the public.

“Harry and Meghan were suddenly too electric,” said Pasternak, who also wrote a book about Princess Diana’s affair with James Hewitt.

“They made the Cambridges seem dowdy, suburban, and rather dull. That does not go down well in the palace.”

The author went on to say how she believes how the behaviour of both Harry and William reflects that of the late Princess Diana and Prince Charles, respectively.

“William and Harry are playing out the dynamic of their parents,” she told the publication. “William is very aligned with his father in his sense of duty above emotion.”

Meanwhile, Prince Harry is described as a “rebel spirit” in the article “fueled by fury at the tabloid press, blowing up the family’s cone of silence in a blockbuster interview”.

Pasternak was referring to the bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, in which they both made a series of allegations about their time in the royal family.

Meghan claimed that a senior member of the royal family made a remark about the colour of her unborn child’s skin, while she also alleged that she was denied help by palace aides after confessing that she had experienced suicidal thoughts.

In response to the interview, Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”

Pasternak went on to say how she is unsure what all this means for the future of the British monarchy.

“The Sussexes have sparked something so fundamentally incendiary in this country that it is changing the face of Britain, and I think the monarchy as an archaic institution may well topple.”
