The Queen has returned to Windsor Castle after a short stay at her Sandringham estate.

In March, it was reported that Queen Elizabeth II had departed from London amid the coronavirus outbreak, moving to Windsor Castle before the nationwide lockdown in the UK was announced.

On the royal family’s official Twitter account, it said that a “number of changes” were being made to the monarch’s schedule “as a sensible precaution and for practical reasons in the current circumstances”.

The Duke of Edinburgh joined the Queen at Windsor Castle, having spent a great deal of his time at his cottage Wood Farm at Sandringham during his retirement.

In August, the royal couple travelled to Scotland for their annual summer break at Balmoral.

They later travelled to Sandringham, where they have been residing for several weeks.

On Tuesday 6 October, the Queen returned to her royal residence in Windsor, Buckingham Palace confirmed.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the Queen has taken part in several socially-distanced royal engagements at Windsor Castle.

The 94-year-old made her first major appearance since lockdown in June, when she attended a small military ceremony conducted in honour of her “official” birthday, following the cancellation of Trooping the Colour.

A month later, the monarch knighted Captain Sir Tom Moore at Windsor Castle, after the Second World War veteran raised almost £33 million for NHS Charities Together by taking part in a walking fundraiser in the lead-up to his 100th birthday.
