A maximum of 30 royal family members will attend the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral in line with coronavirus restrictions

On Saturday 17 April, the royal family will pay their respects to the late Duke of Edinburgh with a small funeral attended by only close relatives due to coronavirus restrictions.
Prince Philip passed away on Friday 9 April at the age of 99 at Windsor Castle.
While the funeral of such a high-profile figure would usually be expected to be attended by hundreds of guests with crowds of the public gathering nearby in support and to watch the procession, just 30 people will be permitted to attend Saturday’s service due to government guidelines. Likewise, the public has been urged to “stay away” and leave messages of condolence online instead.
It will be a royal ceremonial funeral as opposed to a state funeral, which are usually reserved for the head of state. Both The Queen Mother and Princess Diana had royal ceremonial funerals.
The 30-person limit does not include clergy; the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Dean of Windsor will preside over the service.
While the Queen and Prince Philip have 10 great-grandchildren, the family has considered them too young to attend the service as they are all aged 10 and under.
These are the family members who will be in attendance at Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday.
The Queen
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were married for 73 years, making him the longest-serving consort in British history. It has been up to the monarch to decide who else will attend the service.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall
Prince Charles, 72, Prince Philip's eldest son and heir to the throne, will attend the funeral on Saturday with his wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.
The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence
Princess Anne, the only daughter of the Queen and Prince Philip, will attend the funeral with her husband, Sir Laurence, a retired Royal Navy officer.
The Duke of York
Prince Andrew, the Queen and Prince Philip's third child, stepped back from royal duties in November 2019, following his Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis over his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The funeral will be the first official televised royal event he has attended since - he was not even featured in published photographs of his daughter Beatrice's wedding last summer.
The Earl and Countess of Wessex
As Prince Philip’s youngest son, Prince Edward will also attend the funeral with his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, who has said to be particularly close to the Queen.
Peter Phillips
Peter Phillips, 43, is Princess Anne’s eldest child and the only son of hers and her first husband Captain Mark Phillips.
As for his relation to Prince Philip, Peter was one of his many grandchildren.
Zara Tindall and Mike Tindall
Zara Tindall, 39, is the second child of Princess Anne, whose father is also Captain Mark Philips, Anne’s first husband.
The British equestrian will attend the funeral on Saturday with her husband, Mike Tindall.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
As the eldest son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana and third in-line to the throne, Prince William, 38, will attend on Saturday and walk in the procession behind his grandfather’s coffin.
His wife of 10 years, Kate Middleton, 39, will also attend.
The Duke of Sussex
Prince Harry, 36, is the youngest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. In a personal statement, Harry described his grandfather as a “master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ‘til the end”.
He has flown from his home in Los Angeles to attend the funeral on Saturday, though his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, has stayed in the US given her pregnancy with the couple’s second child.
Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi
As the daughter of Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, the Duchess of York, Princess Beatrice will attend the funeral on Saturday.
She will bring her new husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, whom she married last year.
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank
Beatrice’s sister, Princess Eugenie, will also be in attendance this weekend and will bring her partner, Jack Brooksbank, whom she married in 2018.
Lady Louise Windsor
Lady Louise Windsor, 17, is the only daughter of the Earl of Wessex and the Countess of Wessex.
As the youngest granddaughter of the Queen and Prince Philip, who also happens to be 14th in line to the throne, she will attend the funeral on Saturday.
Viscount Severn
James Mountbatten-Windsor, 13, is the youngest child of the Earl of Wessex and the Countess of Wessex and will attend his grandfather’s funeral on Saturday with his parents and his sister.
Princess Alexandra
Princess Alexandra, 84, is one of the Queen’s cousins and is a working member of the Royal Family.
She is the daughter of Prince George, Duke of Kent (the younger brother of the Queen’s father, George VI) and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark.
Her mother, Princess Marina, was also a first cousin of Prince Philip, meaning that she is his first cousin once removed.
The Duke of Gloucester
The Duke of Gloucester, 76, is another one of the Queen’s first cousins and will attend on Saturday with his wife.
He is the second son of the late Duke of Gloucester and the late Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who was the third daughter of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch.
He is a grandson of George V and became heir to his father’s titles following the death of his elder brother, Prince William of Gloucester, in a flying accident on 28 August 1972.
He is a working member of the royal family and lives at Kensington Palace with his wife, the Duchess of Gloucester, Birgitte van Deurs, and their three children.
The Duke of Kent
The Duke of Kent, 85, is the older brother to Prince Michael of Kent and Princess Alexandra, and is first cousin to both The Queen and Prince Philip.
The Earl of Snowdon
David Armstrong-Jones, known as David Linley, 59, is the 2nd Earl of Snowdon and, as Princess Margaret’s son, he is the Queen’s nephew.
His father is the photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones.
David was divorced from his wife, the Countess of Snowdon, last year after 26 years of marriage.
Lady Sarah Chatto and Daniel Chatto
Lady Sarah Chotto, 56, is the daughter of Princess Margaret, and Antony Armstrong-Jones.
This means that she is the Queen’s niece. She will attend Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday with her husband, actor David Chatto.
Bernhard, Hereditary Prince of Baden
Bernhard, Hereditary Prince of Baden, 50, is the eldest son of Maximilian, Margrave of Baden and Archduchess Valerie of Austria. He is a great-nephew of Prince Philip.
Prince Donatus, Landgrave of Hesse
Prince Donatus, 54, known as “Don”, is the eldest son of German aristocrat Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse, and his ex-wife, Princess Tatiana of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.
He is the head of the House of Brabant and the German House of Hesse, which is the house into which Prince Philip’s two younger sisters, Cecile and Sophie, got married.
He is a descendant of Queen Victoria.
Prince Philipp of Hohenlohe-Langenburg
Prince Philpp of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, 51, is the child and only son of Kraft, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and his first wife, Princess Charlotte of Croÿ.
He is also part of Prince Philip’s wider German family.
The Countess Mountbatten of Burma
Penelope Knatchbull, 67, is the current Countess Mountbatten of Burma and is the only daughter of Marian Hood and Reginald Eastwood.
In 1979, she married Norton Knatchbull, Lord Romsey (Prince Charles’s cousin), who is the son and heir of the late Patricia Knatchbull, who was the 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma, and John Knatchbull, the 7th Baron Brabourne.
Prince Charles served as best man at their wedding.
