From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. The royal family has wished Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor a happy birthday.

On 6 May, Archie, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex‘s first child, turns one.

To mark the occasion, members of the royal family, including the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have shared happy birthday messages across their social media channels.

The official Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts for the royal family shared a photograph of the baby from his first photocall in May 2019.

In the image, Archie is being held by Meghan as the Queen, the duchess’ mother Doria Ragland, Prince Harry and Prince Philip gaze at the baby.

“Happy Birthday to Archie Mountbatten-Windsor who is celebrating his 1st birthday today!” the caption reads, including balloon and confetti emojis.

“Archie is the Queen’s eighth great-grandchild.”

On the social media accounts for Kensington Palace, Catherine and Prince William wished Archie a happy birthday alongside a group photograph from the day of his christening in July 2019.

Clarence House also shared a message from Prince Charles and Camilla, stating: “A very Happy Birthday to Archie, who turns one today,” and sharing a black and white photograph of Prince Charles, Prince Harry and Archie.

In the month leading up to Archie’s birthday, several fans of Meghan and Prince Harry organised a fundraiser to help raise money for four charitable organisations.

The campaign has since raised more than £40,000 for Children’s Aid in New York, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, Nourish in South Africa and WellChild in the UK.

On the day of Archie’s arrival in May 2019, Prince Harry said watching Meghan give birth was an “amazing experience”.

“How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension,” Prince Harry said.

“We’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing.”
