On the night of Saturday, February 12 the top toys were honored at the 11th annual Toy of The Year Awards at the American International Toy Fair.

Held in New York from February 13 to 16, the American International Toy Fair, also known as the New York Toy Fair is the site of around 7,000 product launches a year and is the final of the 'big three' international toy shows - the other two being the London Toy Fair (January 25-27) and Nuremberg (February 3-8).  The winners of the Toy of the Year awards were selected by an independent panel of industry experts, retailers and journalists.

This year the winners of the New York Toy Fair - Toy of the Year (TOTY) awards were:

Activity Toy of the Year:

Crayola Color Wonder Sound Studio by Crayola LLC - an interactive coloring pad with 60 different sound effects allowing children to combine their drawings with related sounds. 

Boy Toy of the Year:

Nerf N-Strike Stampede ECS Blaster by Hasbro - the latest in the series of foam missile firing guns from Nerf. The Strike Stampede contains an 18-missile clip and a bipod on which to rest the gun. 

Educational Toy of the Year:

Leapster Explorer Learning Experience by Leapfrog - this handheld gaming device aimed at children from 4-9 years old combines games with topics such as reading or mathematics to encourage learning through play.

Game of the Year:

Scrabble Flash by Hasbro - a modern twist on the classic game of Scrabble, the Scrabble Flash contains five electronic tiles which display changing letters; once a child has completed a word the tiles automatically change letters.

Girl Toy of the Year:

Squinkies Cupcake Suprize! Bake Shop by Blip Toys - the Squinkies series of toys are soft, squeezy characters that can be held in the palm of a child's hand. Each toy comes inside its own bubble from which it can be removed.

Infant/ Toddler Toy of the Year:

My Own Leaptop by LeapFrog - a larger, more robust version of the Leapster Learning Experience for younger children (2-4 years). This handheld electronic device teaches young children about the alphabet and animals through a series of interactive games and activities.

Innovative Toy of the Year:

The Sing-a-ma-jigs! by Mattel Inc - these small soft singing toys are aimed at children three years old and over. Children can change whether the toy sings, chats or 'harmonizes' by squeezing its hand.

Outdoor Toy of the Year:

Nerf Super Soaker Shot Blast by Hasbro - this air-powered water gun features a large capacity tank and can shoot streams of water up to 7.62 meters (25 feet).

Pre school Toy of the Year:

The Sing-a-ma-jigs! by Mattel Inc - also voted the Innovative Toy of the Year, these small soft singing toys are aimed at children three years old and over. Children can change whether the toy sings, chats or 'harmonizes' by squeezing its hand.

Speciality Toy of the Year:

HEXBUG Nano Habitat Set by Innovation First Labs Ink - Hexbugs are small robotic devices that can walk, run and interact with each other like real insects. This toy contains two bugs and a set for building an environment for the bugs to 'live' in.
