Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Never, never skimp on a coat. You will regret it. If you see something that you really like and can afford, buy it. I just bought my winter coat, a long cream boucle number from Nicole Farhi which cost pounds 600. Banish all thoughts of "Oh it's all right for her" from your mind. This was my first coat for 12 years, I had been making do with old fireman's jackets and big cardigans and lots of thermal vests. I deserve it. This year's look is either maxi or short and neat which gives plenty of scope; but keep it essentially simple - fake fur trim or a few military details. (I have to say that there is nothing nicer than a long snuggly coat, don't these girls with mini coats get cold knees?) If even the high street versions featured here are out of your price range then do visit your local army surplus store, where pure wool greatcoats of fantastic quality can be yours for not very much at all.
