From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. In an episode of her podcast Broad Ideas on 23 October, the Hart of Dixie alum opened up about her difficulties with pregnancy in honour of Pregnant and Infant Loss Awareness Month, saying: “It’s one of the biggest things I talk about with pregnancy and having babies. I’ve had miscarriages, so I’ve had losses.” Bilson clarified to author and podcast guest Libby Weintraub that “they were early on”.
In 2014, the OC actor welcomed daughter Briar Rose, eight, with ex-fiancé Hayden Christensen.
Sparks flew between the pair when they first met on set in 2007 while filming the sci-fi film Jumper, in which they played love interests. At the time, they were both 26 and Bilson had recently ended her three-year relationship with her OC co-star, Adam Brody.
They were engaged the following year but called off their engagement for three months in 2010 before ultimately getting back together. Speaking to People in 2014, Christensen explained that they named their daughter Briar Rose after the Disney princess in the 1959 version of Sleeping Beauty. “There’s a Disney reference there, I suppose. The original Sleeping Beauty is called Briar Rose. Rachel - we both love Disney - but Rachel, especially, was very keen on the name,” he explained.
After nearly 10 years together, the pair split in 2017, reportedly due to personality differences, according to People.
Since their split, the former couple have remained committed to co-parenting Briar Rose, with both of them being open about how they try to maintain a healthy dynamic for their daughter.
“Communication is key and just being on the same page, so everything’s about the kid,” Bilson told People in 2021. “As long as you put the kid first, everything will be okay.”
Recently, in an August episode of her podcast, Bilson told listeners that she took Briar Rose and her friends to see Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles. Unfortunately, she said that they had to leave early.
“We left early,” Bilson explained. “Briar’s friend Aria danced her a** off to ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ - she was feeling it - and then just turned around, sat in her seat and passed out.”
She continued: “Everyone around us was laughing because it was so cute. Briar wanted to stay until the end, but her two friends were just done. So we left early. Briar was so mad about that. She was so mad.”
Bilson also revealed that it was her daughter’s very first concert. “It was a really cool experience except that it was Briar’s first concert and I’m like: ‘Where do you go from here?’” Bilson said of the show. “For my daughter to see this, I think it’s so rad. It’s one woman, she writes her own s***, she’s really talented and she does it and like, look at what she’s done.”
