The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been commended for the “natural” and “informal” birthday message they shared today in honour of Queen Elizabeth II‘s 93rd birthday.

The message, which was posted on the couple’s recently launched Instagram account, reads: "Happy Birthday Your Majesty, Ma’am, Granny. Wishing you the most wonderful day! Harry and Meghan.”

While other members of the royal family have also shared posts on social media for the Queen’s birthday, several Instagram users pointed out that Prince Harry and Meghan's inclusion of the term “Granny” and their sign-off added a pleasant touch of informality to their message.

“Love the caption, it’s so real and relatable,” one person wrote.

“What a beautiful message – so natural, informal and genuine,” another added. “Something I’d write to my friends and family... love it!”

Another person highlighted that the post shows a different, more intimate side to the Queen, as a grandmother and grandmother-in-law to the royal couple.

“This post shows that no matter how high and powerful the Queen is, she can still be a loving and happy granny,” they wrote.

Someone else described the birthday message as “nice and personal”, while another referred to the duke and duchess as “the cutest”.

One of the photographs featured in the post shows the Queen inspecting officers during the Sovereign’s Parade at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst on 12 April 2006.

In the picture, the Queen smiles at Prince Harry in his uniform as he grins back at his grandmother.

“Love that photo of her Majesty inspecting the officers. Harry’s cheeky face with his granny looking at him adoringly. Bless!!” one Instagram user commented.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also wished the Queen a happy birthday on the Kensington Palace Twitter and Instagram accounts, which they previously shared with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The palace shared a photograph of the royal couple on the Buckingham Palace balcony alongside their two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Harry.

“Wishing a very happy 93rd birthday to Her Majesty The Queen!” the caption reads.
