From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Prue Leith has recalled feeling “so embarrassed” when she realised a party she’d attended at the age of 19 in Paris was actually an orgy.

Speaking to Jonathan Ross on his eponymous talk show, The Jonathan Ross Show, the 81-year-old Great British Bake Off star explained that she ultimately decided to take all of her clothes off at the party in a bid to fit in.

“I did go to an orgy in Paris, but I have to claim I didn’t know I was going to go to an orgy,” she told Ross.

“I thought I was going to a party. Went with a very nice guy, so thought that would be great.”

Leith went on to describe the event, explaining how she saw naked bodies in almost every area of the party.

“All I can say is room after room of bouncing bottoms everywhere... on the floor, in all the rooms. I was so embarrassed,” she said.

Leith added how she met a man at the party who encouraged her to join in.

“Anyhow, this guy, he thought it was fantastic. So he just vanished.

“So there I am, 19 or something. So I went to the bar and somebody immediately said to me, ‘Why have you got your clothes on?’ I said, ‘I’m just going to change’.”

Leith went on to say how she “realised the only way to be invisible was to take [her] clothes off”.

“So I took my clothes off and walked around this party. Spent the next hour saying I was going to the bar, the loo, looking for a friend. I missed the orgy, although I was there!”

Leith went on to say how she was unable to celebrate her 80th birthday last year due to Covid restrictions.

She said: “I was going to take all my friends to Scotland. It was cancelled. I thought I’ll rebook this year and we’ll go when I’m 81.

“But everyone’s done the same and so they’re booked out the whole year. So we’re going to celebrate my 80th on my 82nd if I’m still here to celebrate it.”
