Recognised as one of Africa's most powerful contemporary artists, El Anatsui brings the fruit of his chainsaw to the October Gallery from 14 May.

HIs work, fashioned from mahogany, afara and iroko, dwells on the history of the African continent, drawing simultaneously on traditional African idioms and contemporary western art to straddle a range of aesthetic sensibilities. The exhibition coincides with the publication of the first book dedicated to the artist's work.

October Gallery, 24 Old Gloucester St, London WC1 (0171-242 7367) 14 May to 20 Jun
