Peter Lindbergh death: Meghan Markle leads tributes to late photographer

People are taking to social media to mourn the photographer's death

Celebrities have been posting their tributes to fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh, whose death was announced today on his Instagram account.

The 74-year-old photographer was considered on of the most influential contemporary fashion photographers and was best known for his humnanist, cinematic approach which many credit with redefining beauty standards.

He most recently photographed all of the women who appeared in Meghan Markle's issue of British Vogue.

Duke and Duchess of Sussex

The official Instagram account for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry posted to honour "the life and work of photographer Peter Lindbergh".

The caption explained that: "The Duchess of Sussex had worked with Peter in the past and personally chose him to shoot the 15 women on the cover for the September issue of British Vogue, which she guest edited.

"There is no other photographer she considered to bring this meaningful project to life."

Linda Evangelista

Supermodel Linda Evangelista posted an image to her Instagram that shows the two of them together. She captioned it "Heartbroken. R.I.P. my Peet."

Charlize Theron

The Oscar-winning actor posted a picture of the two on Twitter and said that her "heart is broken" and called Lindbergh a "genius and an absolute master of his craft", as well as "one of the best human beings I have ever met".

Justine Picardie

Harper's Bazaar UK editor in chief Justine Picardie said: "Peter Lindbergh was a truly great photographer, whose creative aesthetic shaped the entire fashion industry."

She continued: "His imagery was utterly unique, with its combination of elegance and romance, and he was possessed of a brilliant and rare gift for storytelling.

"Lindbergh’s narrative of Amber Valetta as an angel on the streets of New York, photographed for Harper’s Bazaar in 1993, is one of my all-time favourite fashion stories; yet as with so much of his exceptional work, it transcended fashion, and remains as timeless now as when it first appeared."

New York Times fashion director Vanessa Friedman called him a "master of monochromatic fashion photography" in a tweet.

Mika

British singer and songwriter Mika tweeted two images of himself Lindbergh and said he "never met anyone else like him. His generosity of spirit, his talent his warmth"

In a follow-up tweet, he said that "in front of his lens it was ok to be fragile, imperfect, sensual and strong all at the same time" .

Fei Fei Sun

Chinese model Fei Fei Sun also posted an Instagram tribute, saying: "You will be forever in our heart."

Edward Enninful

The British Vogue editor in chief, who worked with the photographer on his recent shoot, has said that Lindbergh "was both a visionary photographer and a dear friend".

He continued: “His ability to see real beauty in people, and the world, was ceaseless, and will live on through the images he created. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, worked with him or loved one of his pictures.”

The news of Lindbergh's death was shared on the photographer’s Instagram account on Wednesday morning alongside one of his black-and-white photographs.
