Preston’s death on Sunday 12 July followed a two-year battle with breast cancer.
The news was confirmed in an Instagram post written by Travolta.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer,” he wrote.
“She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many.”
Now, Newton-John has also honoured the memory of Preston in an Instagram post.
The actor shared an old photograph of herself with the Jerry Maguire star and praised her “radiant, warm and gentle spirit” in the caption.
“A loving, devoted wife, mother and sweet friend,” Newton-John.
“My heart breaks for John, Ella and Ben. No words can express my sorrow for her family. Kelly’s light shines on in her beautiful children.”
Preston and Travolta had three children together: Ella, 20, Benjamin, 9, and Jett, who died of a seizure in 2009 at the age of 16.
Many other actors have paid tribute to Preston on social media, including Sarah Paulson and Josh Gad.
“I’m in absolute shock,” Frozen actor Gad wrote.
“What a beautiful and amazing actress and person. So sad to hear of her passing at such a young age. My heart goes out to John Travolta and the entire family. What a loss. RIP #KellyPreston.”
