Volkswagen reveals details of new Tiguan: Next-generation SUV is bigger inside and out

Volkswagen has unveiled its second-generation Tiguan, which is set to arrive in showrooms in the spring. The major makeover brings larger dimensions inside and out, with the SUV adding both length and width as well as getting a longer wheelbase than its predecessor.

That translates into a more spacious interior for both passengers and luggage, an all-important aspect of a family-focused car. Everyone travelling front and back gets more room, while the load bay is now 615 litres and 1655 with the rear seats folded. Spec levels and standard equipment listings have not yet been announced, although the range-topper will be the R-Line model.

Petrol and diesel options will include three turbodiesels ranging from a 114bhp 1.6-litre to a selection of three 2.0s; the most powerful will produce 217bhp. Two petrols – a 1.4-litre and a 2.0 turbo – will also be available. These may well be joined by a GTE plug-in hybrid, previewed by a Frankfurt Motor Show concept with a 1.4-litre petrol engine teamed with an electric motor. Its powertrain produced 215bhp with claimed CO2 emissions of only 42g/km and 149mpg.

The newcomer has a lower ride height than its predecessor, and will be available with four-wheel drive in all but the least-powerful variants. Both a six-speed manual transmission and a DSG twin-clutch auto will be available.

Pricing is expected to be in line with that of the current model, which starts at £22,975.
