Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. If you’ve heard of Donkervoort, you’re already a bit of a petrol head. In which case, you probably already know that back in 2005, the Dutch outfit claimed the Nurburgring lap record for production cars with its 270 RS.
Since then, they’ve not been resting on their laurels down Donkervoort way. They launched the D8 GTO, and now here’s the D8 GTO-RS.
This is built using a patented multi-layer carbon fibre construction developed for low weight and high strength. Its body design adds a claimed 50kg of downforce front and rear, as well as reducing drag by a fifth.
All this helps the tuned 2.5-litre Audi five-pot give it a 0-62 time expected to be on the hypercar-baiting side of 3.0 seconds. Final figures are yet to be, well, finalised, but the standard D8 GTO could do 2.8 seconds and this one will get there quicker still.
It won’t be as pricey as a true hypercar, however. The D8 GTO-RS starts at £127,652 plus VAT, though you can easily bump that up by speccing stuff like upgraded suspension and a dual-clutch box.
What you can’t spec is right-hand drive, because it’s not available. You can’t buy time, either – which isn’t on your side, because of the 65-off production run Donkervoort says only 23 remain unsold.
