Renault plans to abandon side-impact bars in 1997 when the Clio is replaced, because it says there are much safer ways of protecting drivers and passengers in accidents. Although most car manufacturers now install the bars, an increasing number of safety experts say they are useless in up to 85 per cent of side-on accidents.
