From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Volkwagen's New Compact Coupe (NCC) has been judged "Best Concept" by AutoWeek magazine.

AutoWeek praised the New Compact Coupe's "almost production-ready" finish and its hybrid engine. The NCC beat other high-profile concepts such as the Audi e-Tron, the GMC Granite, the MINI Beachcomber and the Chevrolet Aveo RS Show Car to take the prize, which was awarded at the 2010 Autoweek Design Forum January 14.

"The NCC stands as Volkswagen's most realistic vision for how full hybrid vehicles will be able to satisfy the everyday needs and desires of today's drivers," said Stefan Jacoby, president, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Volkswagen showed how you can have fuel efficiency, excellent design, and a dynamic driving experience all in one vehicle."

The New Compact Coupe is powered by a combination of gasoline engine and an electric drive motor. Working together, Volkwagen claims that they can achieve fuel efficiency of 4.2 l/100 km (45 mpg).
