Motoring: Sir Alan Sugar says he’s still Rolls-ing in it after downsizing

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Keen viewers of the latest series of The Apprentice could be forgiven for thinking that Sir Alan Sugar’s fortune is shrinking. The tycoon, who made his pile from Amstrad but is arguably more of a TV celebrity than high-flying businessman today, seems to have traded his £300,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom in for a cheaper model.
His old luxury set of wheels was described by Top Gear magazine as “the best luxury car in the entire world”, but Sir Alan has swapped it for the more modestly-sized Rolls-Royce Ghost. And while the Ghost is by no means a banger, it is a full £100,000 cheaper and is based on a BMW.
The Apprentice star’s spokesman is defensive, telling The Independent: “Don’t read anything into it. Sir Alan loves Rolls-Royces and just wanted to have the latest model. It’s still a Rolls-Royce after all.”
That’s us told then.
