Miley Cyrus is mourning the death of her dog Mary Jane, who has died following a cancer diagnosis.

The singer shared a tribute to the pit bull mix, who was a rescue dog, with her 119 million followers on Instagram.

The 28-year-old posted a clip featuring pictures of her dog and an unreleased song called MARY JANE 5EVR, which she said she wrote "years ago". Cyrus said she wrote the track about her dog on the piano in her Malibu house, which was destroyed in the 2018 California wildfires.

She added: "A lot has changed over time. Mostly me.

"Music is my medicine. This song revolves around loss & heartache. Which I am currently experiencing after Mary Jane’s passing.

"MJ was a true queen. She wore her grace, dignity & kindness like a crown. She will never be forgotten and will forever be missed. To know her is to love her. It has been my honor being her mom and best friend."

In MARY JANE 5EVR, Cyrus sings: "I wish you looked at me the way you look at Mary Jane / The way you let her kiss you and the way you say her name / You like to call me crazy, I don’t know that I’m insane / But you used to look at me, the way you look at Mary Jane".

The singer shared more details about Mary Jane and her illness in an Instagram Story. "Anyone who knows me & it doesn’t have to be well is aware that my best friend in the whole world is a rescued pit bull mix named Mary Jane,” she wrote.

“'She has come to my rescue every time my heart has been broken. Put me back together again. Going thru this pain without her magic power is so lonely”.

She added: “MJ was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago …. & since then multiple types and tumors. I was told it’d be an uncertain amount of time until she’s gone. Advised to spend every second savouring her special spirit…. which wasn’t anything new. I had been for 10 years.

“In life it is easy to take things for granted. To let little miracles pass you by without moments of gratitude. To be oblivious when the rays of heaven shine down onto you. But when it came to my ANGEL Mary Jane… never once did I forget the gift I had been given. She made it impossible to. She was a dog with wings in a way.”

Telling her fans more about what her beloved pet meant to her, Cyrus wrote: “We’ve never said hurtful things we didn’t mean to each other. Never have we fought and went to bed angry. Not once has our loyalty wavered.”
