From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Michelle Obama has been keeping busy in the two years since she left the White House, from empowering young people to achieve their goals to preparing for a nationwide tour to promote her new book.
And now, she’s even dipping her toes into the wedding industry. Well, sort of.
On Saturday, the former FLOTUS helped a young couple tie the knot at the Theater on the Lake in Chicago.
Stephanie Rivkin and Joel Sircus, who were led through their vows by Obama, have close ties to the family.
The bride, Rivkin, is the daughter of Robert S.Rivkin, the deputy mayor of Chicago, and Cindy Moelis, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama to serve as director of the President’s commission on White House Fellowships.
During the ceremony, one attendee, Tina Newman, couldn’t contain her excitement after Obama appeared at the altar and published a now deleted Instagram story.
“Holy Moly,” Newman's post reads, complete with a heart emoji.
“That moment when Michelle Obama officiated at your (cousin’s) wedding!”
In the video, which has since been obtained by TMZ, Obama can be seen wearing a long-sleeved black dress as she recites vows into a microphone for the bride to repeat after her.
According to The New York Times, the bride is 27-years-old and a sales account manager for Google in the New York office but will be moving to Chicago in October.
The groom, 26, is an investment associate at DNS Capital, “the investment office for Gigi Pritzker” and her husband.
The couple, who both graduated from Yale, met while high school students at Walter Payton College Prep.
The wedding comes just weeks before Obama embarks on the book tour for her debut memoir, Becoming, a book which she says is "deeply personal".
Earlier this month, she posted a video to Instagram, saying, “Hey everybody, it’s Michelle Obama … It’s a big day for me because I am finished with my book … I can’t wait to share it with the world,” Obama said in the clip.
“Over this time that I’ve been out of the White House, I’ve had time to think and reflect for the first time in a long time and I spent some time really thinking about the people and the stories and the experiences that have shaped me and helped me become the person I am today, and I am proud of what I’ve created.
“I’m proud because it’s candid, it’s totally and utterly me. So I’m also a little frightened because it’s candid and honest and open, but I can’t wait to share it with the world."
