Michelle Obama has thanked Jill Biden after the new first lady sent her a care package of vegetables grown in the White House garden.

On Tuesday, the former first lady shared a photo of the gift to Instagram, where a basket full of broccoli, turnips and various greens can be seen.

In the caption, Ms Obama expressed her gratitude for the “wonderful and delicious surprise”, writing: “So thankful for this beautiful care package from our amazing @FLOTUS! These fresh veggies from the White House Kitchen Garden were such a wonderful – and delicious – surprise. Love you, Jill!”

The sweet gesture from Dr Biden was met with appreciation on Instagram, where Ms Obama’s followers praised the friendship.

“From one legendary Flotus to another,” one person wrote.

Another said: “Omg this is so normal! No drama. Just kindness. I’m so relieved and thankful for both Michelle and Jill!”

Others were excited that the gift showed the garden Ms Obama started when she was first lady has continued to thrive.

“This is so cute!!! What a fun reminder that your legacy is ongoing!” someone else commented, while another person wrote: “I’m so happy that veggie garden is still there.”

The former first lady planted the vegetable garden on the South Lawn of the White House in 2009, with the produce eventually used to feed the Obamas during their time in the executive mansion.

Before leaving the White House, the Obama administration put measures in place to ensure the garden’s longevity, including arranging for the National Park Service to care for the plants and maintaining it through a private funding steam, according to Bustle.

While former first lady Melania Trump did not use the garden much during her time in the White House, one of her advisors expressed her commitment to its upkeep shortly after her husband was inaugurated.

“As a mother and as the first lady of this country, Mrs Trump is committed to the preservation and continuation of the White House Gardens, specifically the first lady's Kitchen Garden and the Rose Garden,” the statement said.
