Megan Fox has addressed a fake screenshot of an Instagram post attributed to her about wearing masks amid the pandemic, explaining that she has “never made any statements regarding wearing masks”.

On Friday, a screenshot from a post shared by Fox on Instagram in 2014 was taken and altered to read: “I noticed comments on my social media questioning my decision to ‘not wear a mask’ in public.”

“While I appreciate the concerns of my fans and others, it is ultimately my decision to trust the universe to keep me and my family safe. We are okay.”

In the Photoshopped screenshot, which was shared alongside a photo of Fox and her boyfriend Machine Gun Kelly holding their face masks in their hands, the post claimed that fans the couple met “did not have any issues” and if they had, Fox would have “gladly put [a mask] on since I always carry one with me for the comfort of other people”.

“Ultimately, I do not think bullying is the way to go about this,” the post concluded. “Please respect our beliefs, values, privacy.”

The fake post went viral on Twitter, where some fans questioned whether the statement was real while others falsely condemned the actress as an “anti-masker”.

Fox responded to the post on her Instagram Stories on Friday, where she denied it was authentic and said it is “scary” that you can go viral and be “socially crucified” for something you haven’t done.

“I’ve never made any statements regarding wearing masks,” the 34-year-old wrote. “Scary that you can go viral and possibly be socially crucified for something you haven’t done.

“The internet is so FUN.”

Fox’s statement was met with support on social media, where fans continued to defend the Transformers star.

“Now I know why Megan Fox is not on social media that much. People love to slander and bully,” one person wrote.

Another said: “Megan Fox did NOT say she refused to wear a mask. Stop spreading lies. Sorry Megan. You deserve better. You really do.”

Fox’s most recent Instagram post was a Valentine’s Day poem dedicated to Machine Gun Kelly, in which she referred to the Home singer as “a most unusually handsome boy”.
