On 20 October, the 40-year-old movie star announced her split from Selema Masekela, the 52-year-old sports commentator. The two on-screen leads were dating for about a year. In the Black Panther actor’s Instagram announcement admitting they’d gone her separate ways, she nodded to a potential reason for their break-up, adding that she couldn’t be with an untrustworthy partner.
“At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust,” her note read. “I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception. I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say: ‘Whatever, my life is better this way.’”
“But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love,” she went on to say. “And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass.”
Nyong’o’s loving fans flocked to her comments section, emphasisng their unconditional support.
One follower wrote: “You are a beautiful, fearless, and wise woman that has chosen to protect her heart and her peace. I applaud you. When someone shows you who they are, believe it. Your words and actions have done that. Your happiness matters too.”
Another viewer said: “I have been there, I know and feel your pain. God have someone better in store for you.”
Now, Nyong’o has honoured her fans’ messages with a heartfelt statement of her own. “Thank you for all the kindness I have received from sharing my heartbreak news,” she said on 22 October via her Instagram story. “The words of encouragement mean more to me than I anticipated. They are a balm.”
“And it feels comforting to have a little corner online for the romantically heartbroken to gather,” the international supermodel continued.
In her subsequent story posts, Nyong’o copied and pasted a few of the notes she’s privately received since her original post about the breakup.
“Let the healing begin,” one message read, while another added: “Vulnerability is a superpower. We lift you up with love, and assemble the sisterhood circle around your heart.”
