A single man who paid £425 for a billboard to advertise himself in the hope of attracting a girlfriend has successfully landed a date for Valentine’s Day.

Mark Rofe, 30, featured on the giant sign lying on his side above the phrase: ”Single? Date Mark. This could be the sign you’ve been waiting for.”

The billboard was located on a busy road in Manchester and directed prospective applicants towards a website that offered further information about Mr Rofe and carries the slogan: “One man, one billboard, one mission”.

Now, the marketing professional, who is from Sheffield, has revealed that after more than 2,000 applications, he has scheduled a date with someone.

“I’m really quite nervous but I’m hoping it will go well,” Mr Rofe told the BBC.

While he would not reveal who he would be meeting, Mr Rofe said the anonymous woman was one of the first people to apply and that they had spoken on the phone several times.

“We’d arranged the date quite late so all the restaurants were booked up so we’re going out for a few drinks,” he added.

“I’m taking it one step at a time but she seems a really interesting person and I’m looking forward to it.”

On Mr Rofe’s website, datingmark.co.uk, the singleton explained that he bought the billboard because all of his friends were coupled up and he was “struggling” to find a romantic partner.

In a “facts and stats” section, he stated that he is 6ft tall and teased that he has kissed more than three women.

The idea for the billboard came about in the pub.

“I was talking to my mate saying how I was struggling on all these dating apps and I joked that I should put my face on a big billboard,” he told the BBC.

“We laughed about it but then actually I thought what a good idea.”
