Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

When it comes to online dating, people go about it in different ways.

Whilst some like to exchange messages for a good few weeks to make sure they get to know someone a bit before meeting up in person, others prefer to skip the chat and just meet up for a drink to see if there’s a spark.

But one couple may have set a record for the amount of time they messaged.

Josh Avsec, 22, and Michelle Arendas, 21, talked on Tinder - albeit sporadically - for three years without ever seeing each other in person.

Their unconventional love story came to public attention after Avsec tweeted out a picture of their exchange.

Arguably ghosting then zombieing each other, the pair, both students at Kent State University in Ohio, made a joke out of how long each of them took to reply to messages.

Arendas replied to Avsec’s tweets - notably quicker than she ever had done on Tinder - and Twitter went mad for their story.

They went viral and even caught the attention of Tinder, who offered to send the students on a dream first date to a city of their choosing - Arendas and Avsec opted for Maui in Hawaii.

Before they jetted off though, the couple had to meet for the first time IRL.

And where better to do so than on Good Morning America.

Both dressed in blue, the nervous pair hugged each other, with Avsec saying: “Michelle, it is so good to finally meet you.”

And in doing so, hearts melted across the world.

We’ll all be waiting with baited to breath to hear how that first date in Hawaii goes.
