Madison Witham, a high school student from Indiana, was excited to show her boyfriend her prom dress in the lead up to the big event at the end of the academic year.
She sent him a photo of herself wearing the dress over iMessage, keeping the picture in black and white so as to keep the colour of the dress a surprise.
Her boyfriend immediately responded in a negative, offensive way, writing: “too much skin, get rid of it and I’ll get you a new one b.”
Witham replied, objecting to her boyfriend’s derogatory point of view.
Rather than realise the error of his ways, he then continued to insult Witham by saying: “you look like a slut b.. no offense.”
By this point Witham had had enough of her boyfriend’s sexist jibes, so she decided to terminate the relationship there and then.
“I’ll stick w/ the dress and get myself a new man, byeee,” she texted, signing off with a smiley face emoji.
Witham’s tweet about the exchange has gone viral, garnering more than 44,000 retweets and 249,000 likes.
People have been praising the teenager for the way in which she dealt with her now ex-boyfriend, with one person describing his behaviour as “toxic”.
“Idk you but I’m proud of ya for not letting any dude control your life!” one person wrote.
“If he gonna judge ya like that he ain’t the one for ya.”
“Yes girl drop that boy and find yourself a real man!” another person commented.
Witham has revealed that she was shocked by the incredible response that her story received.
“I put it on Twitter just to expose him and [show] how mean he was to me,” Witham told Insider.
“I was so surprised when I saw that I went viral because I did not even mean for it to go viral.”
A teen in Florida recently came under fire for asking a girl to be his prom date by using a racist sign.
