We all discuss our sexual exploits from time to time, but how do you know whether your mates are really being honest when they tell you about what they get up to between the sheets?

Well a new study has revealed the truth about how long the average British sex session lasts: 19 minutes.

This breaks down to 10 minutes’ foreplay and nine minutes of intercourse, according to the survey of 4,400 people.

Denmark's bizarre sex campaign asks people to 'Do it for Mom'

Half of the couples surveyed (52 per cent) revealed that their sex lasts as long as they would like but 23 per cent of men and 15 per cent of women wish it wasn’t over so soon.

The survey also revealed that due to time pressures, couples have to make do with a “quickie” 21 per cent of the time.

Nearly a quarter of people (24 per cent) admitted that they’d ideally like intercourse to last for over half an hour, and two-thirds said they’d like it to last at least 15 minutes.

The research by online sex toy retailer Lovehoney forms part of the company’s Mind The Gap campaign which aims to help more couples achieve shared orgasms - where both partners climax together.

Three-quarters of men (75%) orgasm almost every time have sex compared to only 28% of women, and the campaign aims to close this gap between the genders.

According to the survey, sex ends in a shared orgasm only around a third of the time for couples in settled relationships.

Lovehoney sex expert Jess Wilde said: “It is fantastic news that almost 90 per cent of couples have achieved a shared orgasms at some point in their relationship.”

She also gave her tips for female orgasms:

“For women, the key to orgasming easily is to have a strong and healthy pelvic floor, and there are simple exercises they can do to strengthen the muscles in this area.”
