From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Oliver Proudlock has revealed that he started dating his girlfriend, model Emma Louise Connolly, after she sent him a message about the single earring he famously wore on Made in Chelsea.

Speaking on the Independent‘s Millennial Love podcast, the former reality TV star explained he only recently discovered Connolly’s message, which she sent on Facebook before they met.

“I always thought I was the first person who messaged her,” Proudlock said after explaining that he first locked eyes with Connolly when she was walking the runway at a university fashion show in Glasgow.

“You know what I love about Facebook? You can go back,” he continued. “So I went back after telling [the story of how I messaged her first] for about three years, turns out she messaged me first.

“She messaged me going: ‘Is this the real earring?’ and I was like, ‘What?’ That was her way of saying ‘Is this actually you?’”

The 31-year-old and Connolly, who was also a guest on the podcast, spoke online for three years before meeting in person – they decided to meet on a train and travel from Glasgow to London together.

But Connolly nearly missed the train, Proudlock revealed.

“I remember I was on the platform and you know when they do that call, ‘You’ve got three minutes before the doors close’. And I’m standing there and I’m thinking, ‘God she’s not going to make it’.

“Then she comes running down – and I know her now and she likes having so many bags.

"And I just remember her running down with all these bags and in that moment I was like, ‘Yeh this chick is pretty special’.”

After the five-hour train journey, Proudlock asked Connolly out on a date. The two have been together ever since.

"It was the best train journey of my life," Connolly said.
