However, it came as a surprise to viewers earier this month that the couple were already legally married when the TV wedding took place in October 2019.
It prompted rumours that the wedding filmed for the season two finale was staged and not a genuine event for friends and family.
However, in an interview with Fubar Radio this week, Fitzgerald has confirmed that it was "absolutely real".
"We invited all of our friends and family", the 39-year-old said of the nuptials which took place at a home she was selling at the time.
Of her legal ceremony the realtor explained: "We didn’t tell anybody. We just signed the paper for personal reasons and then we wanted to wait until we could have our real wedding".
Fitzgerald says the backyard wedding was mainly down to her now 27-year-old husband: "Romain’s never been married before. A wedding didn’t mean that much to me.
"I was happy to just go on a beach in Bali and I tried very hard to do that actually. No cameras, no anything, just our closest friends."
The Netflix star also discussed the reason for the delay between the civil ceremony and the wedding, implying it was to allow her close friends to honour previous commitments.
"Two of my really close friends, Nicole who was the officiant and who signed as the witness, she was trying to get pregnant and then one of my other friends were too, and they can’t go, so I was like, I don’t want to do that," Fitzgerald said.
"And so we just waited until we could plan and do the wedding like we wanted", she added.
The legal ceremony took place at Ventura Courthouse in California on 9 March 2018.
In the wedding which aired on television, the 39-year-old was given away by her father and son, 22-year-old Austin Babbitt.
