“One of my buddies was in town and we went to a Lakers game,” Emhoff said of the moment he decided to arrange the date with Harris.
“We sat there in the stands and we came up with this text, which was something like, ‘Hey, it’s Doug. Awkward, I’m texting you,'” the lawyer recalled, laughing.
After a few exchanges, Emhoff revealed that he called Harris. “I left this ridiculous voicemail, which she has saved and plays back to me on our anniversary every year,” he said.
“I thought I'd never hear from her again, but ...” Harris then interjected: “But, it was ... adorable.”
Harris revealed she had Googled Emhoff before meeting him for the first time.
“I've never been asked that! I did! ... That's so funny you asked me that question,” she told the interviewer.
Emhoff said that he had no idea that his future wife had Googled him before their date. “Ooo, this is a reveal,” he laughed.
Harris went on to describe her husband's best traits.
“The thing about Doug is that he is exactly who he is,” she said.
“He's just fully authentic and clear about the things he cares about. It's family, it's his work,” she said of Emhoff, who she married in 2014, before he interrupted her to say: “You.”
Regarding Harris’ impending role as vice president of the US, Emhoff said he is fully supportive.
“I understand the role she’s taking and the role that Joe and Jill are taking on too and become very close with them, so I support her and I support them and that’s important because what they’re doing is so much… and they’re walking into so may different crises,” he said.
Emhoff also touched on his wife’s penchant for Converse trainers, which she famously wore on the cover of American Vogue.
There are “several closets full of them”, he joked before adding that the trainers have always been a signature for Harris.
“[Converse are] my casual go-to,” she said. “You know, I grew up with Chucks. I just love them. They're comfortable.”
