On Sunday, the former president and secretary of state marked the milestone with separate posts on social media.
Hillary shared a throwback photo on Instagram which was taken on their wedding day in 1975.
In the image, the couple can be seen smiling at the camera, with Hillary dressed in a $53 (£40) Jessica McClintock white Victorian lace gown, which she purchased at a nearby shopping mall with her mother the night before the wedding.
“Forty-five years,” Hillary captioned the picture. “Never a dull moment, and you're still my best friend. Love you, Bill.”
Bill also shared a tribute on social media, posting a more recent photo of the pair smiling together on Twitter.
“October 11th was a beautiful day 45 years ago. Still is,” he wrote. “The bride was beautiful too. And still is. Happy Anniversary, Hillary. I love you.”
Many of the couple’s followers shared messages of congratulations in the comments section of their respective posts.
“Happy anniversary!! Thank you for always fighting for our rights!!!” one person wrote on Hillary’s post.
Another added: “Congratulations . I’m such a huge admirer of you both.”
The couple married on 11 October 1975 in a simple, at-home ceremony in Fayetteville.
The ceremony was performed in the Clintons' living room by Vic Nixon, a local minister and the next day, the Clinton family hosted a large wedding reception at their friends house.
In March, Hillary told Andy Cohen during an episode of Watch What Happens Live that her husband helped her deal with the fallout from losing the election to Republican Donald Trump.
“He is so romantic and so sensitive that I will come home sometimes and he’ll have flowers for me because he knows I’ve had a bad day,” she said. “He’s really so thoughtful.”
The former first lady added that her husband knew how to be there for her after the presidential campaign, adding: “Lots of times, I was just so devastated. I would just lie down, he’d lie down next to me and just hold my hand. He was so great.”
In a 2015 interview with Girls creator Lena Dunham, Hillary admitted she initially rejected Bill's marriage proposal.
“I was terrified about losing my identity and getting lost in the kind of wake of Bill's force-of-nature personality,” Hillary revealed.
“I actually turned him down twice when he asked me to marry him. We were in England on a trip after law school graduation. He asked me to marry him. I said, 'You know, I can't say yes. I can't do that right now.'”
