Your support makes all the difference.Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken about the benefits of having lived apart from her husband Brad Falchuk for the first year of their marriage.
In June, the actor and Goop founder revealed that she and Falchuk did not live together, and would typically spend four nights a week at Paltrow’s home.
Though the couple moved in together a few months later, the news prompted worldwide coverage and debates into whether or not couples need to live together in order to have a healthy relationship.
Now, speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Paltrow has explained that she found it “interesting” how people reacted to the fact that she and Falchuk were not yet cohabiting.
“I thought it was really interesting how resonant that was for people,” the 47-year-old said.
The Politician star recalled how a close friend described her previous living situation as a “dream”, instructing Paltrow: “Don’t ever move in”.
Paltrow went on to discuss the advantages of living apart from a partner.
“I think it certainly helps with preserving mystery and also preserving the idea that this person has their own life,” she said.
“So this is something I’m trying to remain aware of now as we merge together.”
In the interview, Paltrow also opened up about how she maintains a good relationship with her ex-husband, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who she famously “consciously uncoupled” from in 2014.
“It’s not like there’s a finish line: ‘Oh, we consciously uncoupled; we’re done’,” she said before going on to explain that the two remain close for the sake of their children, Moses, 13, and Apple, 15.
“It’s a lifelong commitment to constantly reinvent your relationship with your ex, which you do presumably because you have children together,” Paltrow continued.
“But I think we put all the hard work in at the beginning. I would say very rarely is it difficult now.”
Paltrow added that she “adores” Martin’s girlfriend, actor Dakota Johnson. “I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional,” she added.
“But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.”
“I always start to think of the ampersand sign—what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by? There’s so much juice in leaning in to something like that.”
