Fern Britton and Phil Vickery have announced their split following a relationship spanning more than two decades.

On Wednesday evening, Britton and Vickery shared almost-identical statements on Twitter revealing their decision to separate from one another.

The couple stated that they were thankful for the support they have received over the years and that they will always share a close bond.

"After more than 20 happy years together, Phil and I have decided to go our separate ways," the television presenter's tweet read. "We will always share a great friendship and our lovely children.

"We would appreciate it if our privacy is respected at this time. Thank you for your continued kindness and support."

Britton and Vickery first met while on the set of BBC Two programme Ready Steady Cook.

They were married in 2000 and share an 18-year-old daughter called Winnie.

Britton has three children from her previous marriage to television executive Clive Jones – twin sons Jack and Harry, born in 1994, and daughter Grace, born in 1997.

The 62-year-old was a presenter on ITV's This Morning from 1999 to 2009, while 58-year-old Vickery has been a chef on the television programme since 2006.

Several Twitter users shared messages of support underneath Britton and Vickery's tweets.

"Sending lots of love," wrote television presenter Steph McGovern.

"Lots of love to you both Fern and Phil," tweeted broadcaster Camilla Tominey.
