Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

You’ll always remember the moment you agree to spending the rest of your life with someone.

From what you were wearing to which Marvin Gaye song was playing, getting engaged is a seismic moment in anyone’s life, one that will have you holding onto the details for years to come.

However, when it comes to popping the question it’s really all about location, location, location.

So, where are the best places to do it?

Do the majority of proposers play it safe with the classic clichés i.e. the Eiffel Towers and Empire State Buildings of the world?

Or, in today’s ever-subversive culture, is it more common to venture further afield and propose somewhere a little kookier like, say, in the midst of a sweaty warehouse rave or in an aesthetically-pleasing garden?

Now, by analysing popular proposal hashtags such as #engaged and #bridetobe, a new study by Hitched.co.uk has revealed the most popular landmarks for Instagram users to get engaged - and they’re all as rom com-worthy as you’d expect.

Given that the data has been taken from Instagram, the results may be slightly skewed given that there are obviously more people "on the 'gram" in some countries than others.

The list is mostly made up of world-famous landmarks that are no stranger to a cinematic proposal, but interestingly the top two most popular spots were occupied by Disney parks.

Proving that childhood nostalgia never truly leaves us, the study revealed that the most popular place to get engaged is in fact Disneyland Paris, with one in 500 proposals taking place at what is often referred to as ‘the most magical place on earth’.

In second place was Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida, one of the largest theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Orlando.

The infamous Eiffel Tower squeezed in at a meagre fourth place, with one in 679 proposals taking place there while the Empire State Building didn’t even appear on the list at all.

Meanwhile, another Disney contender came in eighth place, with one in 1,428 people saying getting engaged at Epcot Park, another theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort.

See the full list below and discover whether your proposal spot really was unique as you thought:
