From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Dame Emma Thompson has said her husband of 25 years, Greg Wise, thought he would end up with the actor Kate Winslet.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, the British actor explained that Wise was told by a psychic friend that he would meet ‘the one’ on the set of Sense and Sensibility, in which he, Winslet and Thompson all starred.

“Before he did the job, he went to see a friend of his who was a bit witchy and she said he would meet his future partner on the film,” Thompson said.

“He assumed it wasn’t me because I was married and quite lot older than him so he thought it might be Kate,” she added, referring to her ex-husband, actor Sir Kenneth Branagh.

Thompson went on to explain that Wise and Winslet went on a bad date.

“He took her to Glastonbury, and she was so bored, and he thought, ‘This isn’t going to work, who can it be?’

“Then things happened that probably shouldn’t have happened, and it’s been 25 years in May,” she added.

Wise has told the same story before, only his version did not include Winslet.

Speaking on Loose Women in December, the star of The Crown said: ”Before I started filming Sense and Sensibility a witchy friend of mine said you are going to meet the love of your life and 25 years later I am still with Em!”

The couple married in 2003 after eight years of dating and have two children, Gaia, 18, and an adopted son, Tindyebwa, 31.
