Good Morning Britain presenter Alex Beresford has opened up about separating from his wife Natalia for the first time.
The 39-year-old, who has a 10-year-old son named Cruz with Natalia, revealed that the couple split just before lockdown.
Speaking on the Britain Get Talking podcast this week, Beresford said he struggled when Natalia developed coronavirus symptoms just after moving out with their son, meaning he had to be separated from Cruz for two weeks.
“It turned out not to be Covid-19 but they had to self-isolate for 14 days,” Beresford said.”I went from living in a house full of people to living on my own, and then there being a lockdown.”
Revealing the pair had split earlier this year but continued to live in the same house as they figured out how things would work for their child, Beresford admitted that he found it hard to “walk away”.
“I’m not a quitter, and I hate quitting things,” he said. “We tried to work through things, but at some point you realise the best thing to do for everybody is walk away, but walking away is never easy.”
The presenter added that living apart “removed a lot of the stress and expectation that a relationship can bring” but that he felt “really lonely” knowing he couldn’t see his son for an extended period of time, dubbing it a “low point”.
"I watched Boris Johnson’s lockdown message sitting on my sofa feeling really lonely," he said. "And I couldn’t see Cruz for two weeks. 'I've realised how strong I am, but I am only strong because of the people I have behind me."
When asked if he was looking for love again, Beresford admitted that he fears growing old on his own but that right now his son is his main priority.
“It’s been a massive learning curve, I didn’t think at the age of 20 that when I was approaching 40, I would be in this situation. It has been a little bit daunting but we’ve been in lockdown, so even if I wanted to go on a date, I couldn’t go on a date,” he explained.
“I don’t want to grow old on my own, life is for sharing and it’d be great to meet someone in the future but they’ve got to be right for me, they’ve got to be right for Cruz.”
Beresford added that the separation has seen him go on a journey and evaluate what it is that he wants from life.
“I’m not even super-duper spiritual, I’ve gone on this journey with energy, and looking at the positives of lockdown I’ve stopped, take a breath, and evaluated what I want,” he said.
“Life at the moment has been so slow, it’s actually given me a chance to think. Sometimes you can think too much. I feel like I’m in a good place and if that happens and the right person comes along one day, cool.”
