Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Time: This week

The Place: Your home

The Essentials: Last week saw the Hindu festival of light, Diwali, and this week millions of Britons will celebrate Guy Fawkes with fireworks displays. To mark both occasions we've picked out some fancy chandeliers and lamps so you can create your own light show indoors.

Funky chandeliers from Candy's Chandies designed by Carole Smith will brighten up any room. They're made from coloured resin components including lime green nipples and pink love hearts (right). The blue and green chandelier costs pounds 157 and the pink hearts is priced pounds 109. Commissions are taken on 0171-737 8230.

Clare Thatcher works with glass and metals to produce stunning contemporary lighting like the 'Medusa II' chandelier which costs pounds l,500, while the 'Curvaceous' chandelier (below right) is pounds 500. Commissions are taken on 0181 5240912.

These 'Volcano' lamps (below) priced pounds 29.95 produce an eruption of light. Complement the heat with Ocean's cool flying saucer style shades in blue, green and white (pounds 19.95). Both are available from Ocean Home Shopping, mail order 0800 132985.
