Frances Bean Cobain has shared a poignant message to mark the 25th anniversary of her father, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s death.
The only child of the late grunge pioneer posted a black-and-white photograph of her father as a child on Instagram Stories.
“If you are struggling with your mental health and need someone to talk to please do not be afraid to reach out to your friends, neighbours, parents, counsellors, teachers or even strangers on the internet,” the 26-year-old wrote alongside it. “Needing help is not weakness. Let’s end the stigma and shame towards the struggle with mental health.”
She concluded the post by sharing the telephone number for the US National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – 1-800-273-8255.
Former Nirvana bass player, Krist Novoselic, also shared a tribute to the rock star on Twitter.
“Kurt – you left us 25 years ago. You mean so much to so many.”
His post has garnered more than 23,000 likes, 8,000 retweets and been flooded with messages of support from fans, since he put it up on Friday.
One person wrote: “We lost a legend. Thank you Kurt. Rest in peace.”
Another said: “Definitely means a lot to me. My first favourite band. As I got older, and my taste in music refined, I realised that Nirvana was way better than I realised when I was young. That is their beauty. You can be 11 and just think they sound cool, or 36 and truly appreciate the art.”
Cobain took his life on 5 April 1994. The 27-year-old rock star’s body was discovered by an electrician on three days later, at his cottage overlooking Lake Washington in Seattle.
A gun and suicide note were found nearby.
The singer wrote: “The fact is I can’t fool you. The worst crime I can think of would be to rip people off by faking it.”
It was later ruled that he had been dead for at least 34 hours.
