Kurt Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, has reportedly married Tony Hawk’s son, Riley Hawk, and fans are beaming with joy that the children of two late ‘90s icons have tied the knot.
On Tuesday 24 October, TMZ was the first to report that the daughter of rock stars Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love was married to the son of skateboarding legend, Tony Hawk. According to the outlet, Frances and Riley exchanged vows on 7 October after obtaining a marriage license in September in San Diego County, California.
In a touching tribute, the wedding was reportedly officiated by REM frontman Michael Stipe, who also happens to be Frances’ godfather.
As news broke of their alleged nuptials, fans on social media gushed over every ‘90s baby’s dream couple. “Wow, that’s quite the rock ‘n’ roll union! Wishing them a lifetime of love and happiness!” wrote one user on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“That’s a match made in heaven. Two icons of rock and skate,” another user said. “Congrats to the happy couple!”
“Can they bring back the ‘90s with their powers? I’m hoping,” joked someone else.
“This just sounds right, like it was supposed to happen,” one user said, while another made the fitting Nirvana reference: “Smells Like Teen Skating”
Frances, 31, and Riley, 30, have reportedly been dating since 2021 but didn’t take their relationship public until early last year. She made her relationship with the pro skateboarder Instagram official when she shared a slideshow of photographs from the past year, two of which featured Riley.
In one picture, he was seen sitting in front of a Christmas tree and smiling at the camera while holding a small dog. The other photograph showed the couple on a boat with his father Tony and his wife, Catherine Goodman.
This is Riley’s first marriage and Frances’ second. She was previously married to musician Isaiah Silva, but filed for divorce in March 2016 after less than two years of marriage. However, the exes became locked in a legal battle over one of her late father’s guitars - the acoustic guitar he played during Nirvana’s iconic MTV Unplugged performance in November 1993.
In May 2018, a judge ruled that Silva could keep the guitar, which he ultimately auctioned off for more than $6m. The legendary punk musician died on 5 April 1994 aged 27.
