Kim Kardashian West has debuted the trailer for her upcoming documentary about criminal justice reform.

On Sunday, the reality star shared a two-minute long clip promoting the film, which is titled Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project, on her social media channels alongside the caption: “The official trailer for my new documentary is here!

“Criminal justice reform is something that’s so important to me, and I can't wait to share these stories with all of you.”

In the video, Kardashian West can be heard saying, “There is a mass incarceration problem in the United States,” before she becomes emotional, adding, “I went into this knowing nothing, and then my heart completely opened up.

“People deserve a second chance."

The documentary, which will air on US television channel Oxygen in April this year, follows Kardashian West as she attempts to “secure freedom for Americans who she believes have been wronged by the justice system”, including Dawn Jackson, Alexis Martin, Momolu Stewart and David Sheppard.

The Justice Project follows the origins of each person’s story, revealing the circumstances that led them to take the actions that changed their lives forever.

In her crusade to shed light on the criminal justice system and help people who are impacted by incarceration, Kardashian West travels to the prisons, speaks to the families and friends, lobbies public officials, and consults with lawyers to develop strategies to facilitate their release.

“I partnered with Oxygen to do the Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project documentary because there are millions of people impacted by this broken justice system, and I wanted to put faces to these numbers and statistics,” Kardashian West, who is also an executive producer, previously said in a statement.

“There are a lot of people who deserve a second chance, but many do not have the resources to make it happen.

"I want to help elevate these cases to a national level to effect change, and this documentary is an honest depiction of me learning about the system and helping bring tangible results to justice reform.”

In 2018, Kardashian West travelled to the White House where she helped convince Donald Trump to grant Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old grandmother who had been serving a life sentence for a non-violent, first-time drug offence, clemency.

The issue of mass incarceration in the United States inspired Kardashian West to study to become a lawyer.

The USA has the highest rate of incarceration per capita in the world and roughly one in every two American adults has, or has had, an immediate family member imprisoned.

The reality star announced the latest direction for her career in an interview with Vogue in April 2019, in which she explained that she began a four-year apprenticeship with a San Francisco law firm in 2018.

Of her decision, Kardashian West said she’d had to think “long and hard,” but that it ultimately came down to realising that if she “knew more” she could “do more”.

Kardashian West said she plans to take the bar exam by 2022.

Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project debuts on Oxygen on 5 April 5 at 7 p.m. ET.
