From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Kate Garraway has returned to Good Morning Britain after taking three months off work while her husband, Derek Draper, was in hospital with Covid-19.
Draper has been in hospital since March when he was placed in an induced coma after contracting the virus.
Earlier this month, Garraway revealed that Draper had emerged from a “deeper coma” and is now in a minimal state of consciousness.
With regards to her return to the Good Morning Britain studio, the 53-year-old presenter teased that her fellow colleagues should not be too kind, otherwise she might get upset.
“Don’t be too nice because I’ll get emotional,” she said on-air on Monday. “Just go back to being rude!”
Garraway’s co-host, Ben Shephard, told her: ”It’s lovely having you back, back to work.
“First day back in quite a while. Nothing has gone wrong yet”.
Garraway countered that quite a few things had already gone wrong that morning.
“The car to pick me up didn’t show up,” she said, while adding that her computer installed a two-hour update when she arrived.
“Two hours getting in early was utterly wasted!” she added.
The TV presenter added that she had “put on fake tan” and “put very long fake eyelashes on” in addition to dying her hair blonder.
Last week, Garraway revealed that she had been told six times by doctors that Draper was not “going to make it”.
“Wonderfully his eyes are opening but we have no real knowledge of what he can see and feel and hear,” she added.
“It’s great that there are some flickers of hope. His lungs are starting to recover a little bit, his kidneys are doing better, his liver is doing better, but they don’t know how much better it can get.”
