Karamo Brown has revealed that his relationship with his father “ended” for a decade after he came out as gay aged 17.

Speaking on the latest episode of Dancing with the Stars, the 38-year-old TV host explained that growing up, his father was his “hero”.

“He called me his champion son,” the Queer Eye star continued.

“But then, as I started to discover who I am, things changed dramatically. When I was 17 going on 18, I told him that I was gay.

“Our relationship ended. It split the family apart and we didn’t speak for 10 years.”

The father of two went on to explain how, despite the strain, he always hoped that him and his father would mend their relationship at some stage.

“I just prayed every day that one day, we could actually get back to being a family again,” Karamo said.

“That day came,” he continued. “[My father] reached out to me and was looking to apologise for what had happened. And we really just started to reconcile our relationship.

“I’m not gonna lie, I’m nervous because us mending is really new, but we’re healing the generational scars that has been happening for so long.”

Brown invited his father to watch him dance in that evening’s performance of Dancing with the Stars, which earned him a score of 25/30 from the judges.
