Jodie Comer has revealed why she did not speak out when rumours circulated on social media that her boyfriend, James Burke, was a Trump supporter.

In the summer, the Killing Eve star became the subject of a social media furore after fans claimed that Burke, Comer’s partner of one year, was a registered Republican voter.

Comer is known for being an advocate for the LGBT+ community, something that her fans thought was at odds with the decision to date a rumoured Republican.

As a result of the rumours, the actor’s name was trending on social media and many fans called for Comer to be “cancelled”.

Now, recalling the rumours, the actor has explained that she chose not to speak out for the sake of her “health”.

“It was really shocking,” she told InStyle.

“It was the first time I had ever been dragged into something like that. And it wasn't just me; it was my family.”

The 27-year-old continued: “I had seen the absurdity of what I was being accused of, and what my partner was being accused of.

“I decided for my own health that I was not going to try and convince these people otherwise. I just wasn't going to do it,” she said.

The actor’s comments come after she opened up about her relationship with Burke in an interview with The Sunday Times Style.

“You know, I would never want to speak badly about people in my past, but yeah, this relationship feels very different. This feels like nothing else," she told the publication.

The couple met while Comer was in Boston last year filming Free Guy, a comedy starring Ryan Reynolds out next year.

“When you actually feel it, you’re like, ‘Ahhh, so this is what it feels like!’” Comer recalled of their meeting.

"And it was special. I was away, it was the height of summer, I was doing this incredible job that was so much fun, it was my first time working in the States. So it was a lot of firsts.”
