While most people come back from holiday with a suntan, Emma Bernhardt brought back yards of tacky, time-warped plastic tablecloths: Mexican tablecloths. 'I thought they'd make great lampshades.'

She's right. They do.

For it seems that Emma, who brought the big plastic crown air fresheners to the city's BMW drivers, has an beady eye for consumable kitsch. So, for that kitchen with campy cultural clout, buy South of the Border, down Mexico way.

Mini lampshades cost pounds 20. The maxi, made-to-order versions cost pounds 35 at Emma Bernhardt Designs (071-928 1834).
