From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Life hacks are great for speeding up mundane tasks like peeling boiled eggs, potatoes or oranges.

Watch the video above for instructions.

1. Transform a can of tuna into a torch

This one's good for camping.

Pierce the top of a tin of tuna with a screwdriver or knife, roll a sheet of toilet paper into a wick and then thread it into the tin.

It should burn for 2-3 hours and supposedly doesn't smell too fishy.

2. Peel a potato with your bare hands in seconds

Make a cut around the circumference of the potato.

Boil the potato then place it in ice water for 5-10 seconds.

3. Peel an orange in seconds

Chop off the top and the bottom.

Make a cut on one side from the top to bottom then peel.

4. Peel a hard boiled egg in seconds

After hard boiling the egg, put it in a cup of water and shake it, using your hand to stop the egg from falling out.

5. Save money on heating bills during winter

Make your house warmer by sticking sheets of bubble wrap over windows and sliding doors.

Spray water on the windows to help the bubble wrap stick.
