Hammersmith Hospital has appointed a new chief executive on a salary of pounds 100,000. John Cooper, who was headhunted for the job, is believed to be Britain's highest paid hospital manager.

He is currently in charge of the Royal Free Hospital.

Hammersmith defended Mr Cooper's salary as reasonable, but Labour's health spokesman, David Blunkett, said good managers could be found for a lot less.
