From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Kirke, who has an older son with her former partner musician Morgan O’Kane, announced the newest addition to her family on social media.
The singer shared a picture on Instagram of a piece of art made from the placenta, revealing in the caption that she gave birth 40 days ago.
“His heart shaped home,” she wrote in the caption, adding the hashtag “placenta art”.
Kirke and Badgley have been together since 2014, marrying at a courthouse in New York three years later.
Kirke announced she was pregnant in an Instagram post shared on 10 February 2020, explaining in the caption that after suffering two consecutive miscarriages, “we were ready to call it".
“I stopped trusting my body and started to accept the fact that I was done,” the musician wrote.
“As a birth attendant, I’ve seen and heard it all. It takes everything I’ve got to detach lovingly from the losses I’ve been present for and be in my own experience.”
Kirke recalled her first experience pregnancy when she 25 years old, saying that she “knew nothing” at the time.
“I had no community. I dove in blissfully unaware about birth and its mysteries,” she stated.
"Now, with 10 years worth of experience to pull from, I treasure my birth community and the knowledge I have. You’re already teaching us how to stay in the day in a way we’ve never had to, little one. Thank you."
Several Instagram users congratulated Kirke and Badgley on the birth of their son in the comment section of her placenta art Instagram post.
“Congratulations! I’ve been checking regularly for an announcement and praying all is well for you, Penn and your baby! So happy to finally here the great news!!!” one person said.
“Yayyyyy!!!!!!! Congrats congrats a million times!” someone else commented.
Kirke also shared a photograph of the baby on her Instagram Story, posting a picture of herself lying on a sofa as her newborn son lay beside her wrapped in a blanket.
In December, Badgley shared a tribute to Kirke on Instagram in honour of her birthday.
The You actor described his partner as a “truly radiant soul”, writing: “For me, it is a joy to witness you when you are happy. For you, I always hope to be a source of joy. I’m really glad we’re married.”
