From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Hannah Straughan, a 25-year-old woman from Sunderland, weighed over 19 stone.
The single mother was rushed to hospital last May when her swollen tonsils were causing her breathing difficulties.
It was then that doctors told her that her weight would classify her as “high-risk” during a tonsil operation.
Straughan was informed that there was a possibility that the operation wouldn’t be successful and that there was a chance that she wouldn’t wake up at all.
“When I was told I was high-risk it broke my heart - it was a real wake-up call,” Straughan said.
After the operation, which fortunately went smoothly, Straughan decided to turn her life around for her young daughter, five-year-old Brooke.
Straughan used to eat pizza and kebabs every night, in addition to a daily fried breakfast and buy lunch either from McDonald’s or Subway.
However, now her life has been completely transformed.
Straughan now weighs nine stone nine ounces, going from a size 24 dress size to a size eight to 10.
Thanks to a strict Slimming World diet plan and Straughan’s sheer determination, she now leads a healthy, balanced lifestyle by eating nutritious food and exercising regularly.
Straughan has also found success in her career as a result of her newfound confidence.
“Before I lost the weight I was unemployed but losing it gave me the confidence to get out there and I found a job straight away,” she said.
“Now I’m out all the time with friends and have lovely clothes to wear.
“I really feel like a completely different person - looking back at the old pictures doesn’t even feel like me."
