From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A dentist and anaesthetist have been arrested following the death of a five-year-old girl who died after having a tooth out.

Karla Selley, of Golden Hill Lane, Leyland, in Lancashire, had gone to the Towngate Dentist Surgery in the town with her mother Tracey and her grandmother to have the tooth out in August.

She was given general anaesthetic because she was terrified of the dentist and had become hysterical at the sight of a needle.

Tragedy struck when the child awoke from the anaesthetic and began to suffer breathing difficulties.

She was taken to Chorley General Hospital but was pronounced dead after unsuccessful resuscitation attempts.

An investigation was launched by Lancashire Police in consultation with the British Medical Association and the Dental Council.

The dentist, who is 41 and from Bolton, and the anaesthetist who is 66, of Preston, were arrested at Leyland Police Station yesterday.

The men, who have not been named by police, were bailed to return to the police station on December 8, while further inquiries were carried out.
