Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Emma Willis and her husband Matt have joined the coronavirus volunteer taskforce.
The presenter and the former Busted musician have completed training for the St John’s Ambulance volunteer vaccination programme, Emma told fans in a post to her Instagram.
Emma and Matt each posted a picture of the couple wearing a St John Ambulance volunteer t-shirt and a face mask.
Emma wrote: "Thank you so much to the whole team who guided and taught us and for making it informative AND fun! What a brilliant bunch of good eggs. Bring on the first shift!!"
Matt told his followers: "We did it... coming to a vaccination centre near you... thanks so much @stjohn_ambulance for all your incredible help and training.. it has been so challenging and rewarding already and we have only just begun..."
Last month, St John Ambulance stopped looking for vaccine volunteers and is currently training thousands of civilians to administer the vaccine, and support or advocate for patients who are receiving the jab.
Volunteers did not need medical experience but received extensive training.
So far, over 30million people in the UK have received the first dose of vaccine, with a target of 32 million doses by 15 April (three days after beer gardens and non-essential shops reopen).
The government has said that all UK adults will have been offered a jab by the end of July.
The latest group to be offered the vaccine is those aged 50-54. The rest of the population will be vaccinated in order, according to their age, in groups of those aged 40-49, then 30-39, then 18-29.
A number of celebrities have so far had the jab, including Dame Judi Dench, Sir David Attenborough, Prue Leith and Sir Ian McKellen.
The Queen and Prince Philip and Prince Charles and Camilla have also been vaccinated.
