At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. On Tuesday, Sheeran posted a photograph on Instagram of a baby blanket and two small socks alongside a caption sharing the news.
“A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you,” he wrote.
“Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter.”
Sheeran revealed that he and Seaborn decided to name their daughter Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.
“We are completely in love with her,” he added.
“Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here.
“We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x.”
The “Shape of You” singer’s post has already garnered more than 400,000 likes and thousands of comments.
Fans have rushed to congratulate the couple, who tied the knot in 2018 after three years of dating, in the comments below.
Many also took to Twitter to share their thoughts on their unusual choice of name.
“Why does Ed Sheeran’s daughter’s name sound so fishy?” tweeted one person.
“Ed Sheeran either unknowingly or not just announced his daughters name and her initials are LASS,” added another.
It's not clear whether or not the name was inspired by climate change, an issue the singer has previously advocated for when, last year, he joined a lineup of musicians to release a song and video about the matter to mark Earth Day.
